Sligeach le Chéile

The event aims to introduce the richness of the Irish language (An Ghaeilge) and traditional Irish culture to members of migrant and new communities who now call Sligo home.

Through a series of interactive workshops and cultural activities, participants will have the opportunity to engage with Irish language, music, song, dance, storytelling, and traditions in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The event will also encourage connection between new communities and long standing Irish speakers in the area, helping to strengthen social cohesion, mutual understanding, and cultural appreciation.

Objectives.

• To introduce members of migrant and new communities in Sligo to the Irish language and Irish cultural traditions.
• To promote awareness, appreciation, and everyday use of the Irish language in an accessible and enjoyable way.
• To support integration and intercultural understanding between diverse communities living in Sligo.
• To improve confidence, wellbeing, self-esteem, and social participation among women and families from migrant backgrounds.
• To create opportunities for meaningful community networking and relationship building.
• To encourage inclusivity, cultural respect, and shared learning through creative activities.

Planned Activities

The event will include:

• Irish Language Introduction Workshop
  A beginner friendly and interactive session introducing common Irish phrases, greetings, pronunciation, and simple conversational Irish. Participants will receive printed learning materials to support continued learning after the event.
• Traditional Irish Singing Session
  A cultural music workshop led by a local singing facilitator, introducing participants to traditional Irish songs, storytelling through music, and community singing.
• Irish Dance Workshop
  A fun and engaging workshop facilitated by an experienced Irish dance instructor, giving participants the opportunity to learn basic traditional Irish dance steps and experience Irish culture through movement and participation.
• Traditional Irish Music Performance
  Local traditional musicians will perform throughout the event, creating an authentic cultural atmosphere and introducing participants to traditional Irish instruments and musical heritage.
• Cultural Networking and Refreshments
  Participants will have time to socialise, network, and build friendships in a relaxed and welcoming setting while enjoying refreshments.
