Seachtain na Gaeilge is an international Irish-language festival and the biggest celebration of our native language and culture that takes place in Ireland and around the world every year.

What is Seachtain na Gaeilge #
The festival events for Seachtain na Gaeilge are organised by voluntary and community groups, local councils, schools, literary and musical groups, and sports, art and cultural organizations. From native speakers, learners and those with only a few words, there’s something for everybody in the festival.
The Irish language belongs to everyone, and every community belongs in Seachtain na Gaeilge – Try It : Surprise Yourself!
When does it take place #
Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish-language week) first took place as a single-week event in 1902. Since then, the festival has grown and blossomed in to a two-week event, running from the 1st to the 17th of March each year, though it still keeps its name – Seachtain na Gaeilge.
How can I take part #
You can take part in the festival in many ways:
- Organize an event for the festival – there are are lots of ideas and suggestions available on snag.ie/events
- Attend a festival event – every year, the information on all all the events is available on our event listings
- Use Irish more during the festival – at home, with your friends, on the phone, in your emails and posts on social media – ger more help and suggestions at snag.ie/resources
- Watch the TV, listen to the radio programmes, and read the newspapers covering the events during the festival
- Buy the official festival program published by the Irish Independent each year. This is the only printed list of events for Seachtain na Gaeilge and also includes articles, interviews, sports, and music and technology features relating to the festival, that learners and those interested in the language will enjoy.
