How do I change the language on my phone and apps to Irish

Find out about the websites and apps that offer Irish as a display language option. Try them out—it’s a great way to practice your Irish.

You’ll usually need to change the display language for an app on your phone via the phone’s general language settings, or the specific language settings for the app, or within the app itself.

How do I change the language on my phone and apps to Irish

Operating Systems #

iPhone/IOS

Some apps on IOS are available in Irish (calendar etc.):

Settings -> General -> Language & Region -> Add Language -> Gaeilge

Samsung/Android

Irish is available as a language option on most Samsung phones.

Settings -> General Management -> Language and input -> Language -> Gaeilge

Other Android phones do not yet have an Irish language option.

Websites/Apps #

Facebook

The desktop/browser version is available in Irish.

Settings & privacy -> Language -> Facebook language -> Gaeilge

The app version on IOS/Android is not yet available in Irish.

The desktop/browser version is available in Irish:

More -> Settings & Privacy -> Accessibility, display, and languages  -> Languages -> App and post languages -> Gaeilge

The app version on IOS/Android is not yet available in Irish.

WhatsApp

On IOS, WhatsApp takes the display language from the phone’s settings:

Settings -> Language -> Gaeilge

On Android, the language is changed within the app’s settings:

Settings -> App language -> Gaeilge

WhatsApp Web will use the same language that was set up on the phone app.

RTÉ Player

You can change the language on the RTÉ Player (both browser and app) by going to the ‘Login page’ and choosing ‘GAE’ as the language option.

If you have an RTÉ account, you can also change the language via the ‘Menu’ in the same way.

Airbnb

On the browser, you can change the language from the ‘Language and region’ icon at the top of the page:

Language and region -> Gaeilge

On IOS, you can change the app language in the phone’s settings:

Settings -> Airbnb -> Preferred Language -> Gaeilge

Email #

Gmail

The desktop/browser version is available in Irish:

Settings -> General -> Language - Gaeilge

The app version on IOS/Android is not yet available in Irish.

Outlook

The desktop/browser version is available in Irish:

Settings -> View all Outlook Settings -> General -> Language and Time -> Language -> Gaeilge (Éire)

On IOS, choose:

Settings -> Outlook -> Preferred Language

Samsung will follow the phone’s primary language settings.

It is not yet available on Android.
