Have a look at our useful tips for teenagers going to Irish college in the Gaeltacht for the first time.

Our five tips #
1. Be ready for the weather
In Ireland, we can have sun one day, then rain, you just never know from one day to the next! So make sure you bring a raincoat along with some sunscreen, and a few pairs of shorts alongside regular trousers won’t go amiss either.
You’ll probably be spending a few evenings by the sea, so pack swimwear. And of course, don’t forget to bring plenty of underwear and socks—just in case there isn’t a regular laundry service available.
2. Bring clothes for costumes
It’s usual to have fun evening events during your college stay, often with themes or competitions, where you and your housemates compete against others for the best costume to win points for your house.
So bring colorful, fun, and quirky clothes. Bring face paint if you can—it really adds to the effect. Best of luck!
3. Pen, paper, schoolbag, dictionary
Along with all the fun and excitement, you’ll also be attending a few Irish classes in the Gaeltacht. Don’t worry—you won’t be tortured with grammar and poetry! Classes usually include fun learning games or learning songs—experiences that will really add to your memories of your time in the Gaeltacht.
So don’t be caught out if you have to do a bit of writing. We recommend bringing a pen and paper, and a small pocket or online dictionary is very handy.

4. If you play an instrument, bring it with you
The Gaeltacht is a place that gives students the opportunity to express their creativity. Students are encouraged to bring musical instruments, so if you can play one, you should bring it along.
The guitar, fiddle, drums, triangle—they’re all welcome. Concerts are often organised during the courses, and it’s a great opportunity to show off your talent. Just make sure to bring the case for your instrument too!
5. Cash—make sure you have some
You’ll get the chance to visit the local shop or somewhere that sells food or drinks during your stay. Who doesn’t love an ice cream on a sunny day?
You’ll be getting three meals a day from your Bean an Tí (host), but it’s always nice to have a snack or two between meals, so bring enough cash for that.
Additional info #
- Towel – Bring a towel—it’s often forgotten but definitely necessary. You’ll be staying with a Bean an Tí, not in a hotel.
- Sports gear – A lot of sports are played on Gaeltacht courses, almost every day. So make sure to bring the right gear: hurley & helmet, football/rugby ball, frisbee, hockey stick, or anything else you enjoy. A wide variety of sports is usually played, and if you’re a talented frisbee player, don’t miss the chance to show off your skills to the other students.
