Five tips for online job interviews

The five tips #

1. Choose a good location

The location you choose for your interview is especially important. Make sure there is enough light and that no shadow is cast over your face. On top of that, be mindful of what’s in the background and your surroundings. Ensure the location has a professional appearance overall to present a positive image of yourself to those on the other side of the camera.

2. Practice

There’s a big difference between a webcam interview and one conducted in a physical office or other workplace. So it’s worth practicing this newer interview method. The best way to prepare is to rehearse either alone or with a friend via webcam. You’ll get used to what works best for you and feel more at ease as a result.

3. Avoid technical problems

We’ve all become more familiar with many new technologies while working from home, including video conferencing software. Find out which software will be used during your interview and research how to use it most effectively. You don’t want technical difficulties to get in the way of your performance—especially if you have a presentation or demo to give.

4. Be mindful of dress code

There’s a particular consideration when it comes to what to wear during an at-home interview. Of course, usually only the upper half of your body is visible on camera, so make sure it looks neat and tidy. You have a limited amount of time to make an impression on the interviewers, and clothing gives you a chance to do so positively. As for the lower half of your body—it doesn’t really matter!

5. Give your full attention

It’s important that you give the interviewer your full attention during the interview. It’s recommended to focus on the camera rather than the screen—you can put a sticker next to the camera to help with this. It’s a good idea to nod and smile here and there to show you’re listening. You’ll have no trouble doing this if you’re genuinely interested in the new role being offered!
