There are many resources available if you are looking for suggestions for Irish names for your baby, names which have rich and emotive meanings that are deeply connected to the culture and history of the country.

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Gaelic centre of learning in Skye, maintains a long list of Irish names for men and women, along with their known English equivalents and brief information on where the name originated.

The Irish Central Statistics Office publishes the most popular Irish names for boys and girls each year. In 2023, Rían and Fiadh were amongst the most popular names for boys, in 2024, Rían and Éabha, but in 2025, Rían pushed Jack off the top of the boys’ name list for the first time. Éabha agus Fiadh were still amongst the most popular names for girls in 2025.

For a more unique name, look to Irish mythology, for names like Caílte for boys and Bébhinn for girls.
