Gaelic Athletic Association founded

1 January 1884

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was founded on 1 November 1884 at a meeting in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, by a group of men who saw the importance of creating a national organisation to make athletics available to everyone. Within six months of that famous first meeting, GAA clubs began to emerge all across Ireland.
