Irish becomes an official working language of the EU
1 January 2007
On January 1, 2007, Irish gained status as an official working language of the European Union. This status was achieved following a strong public campaign under the banner ‘Stádas’.
As a result of the language’s new status in Europe, it is now used more in the European Parliament and in other parts of the European Union. Employment opportunities are also now available for people who speak Irish.
