Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language founded
1 January 1876
The Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language (SPIL) was founded on 29 December 1876. The aim of the SPIL was to protect the status of the Irish language, a status that was under threat and declining at the time. The society succeeded in having Irish included in the curriculum of primary schools, secondary schools, and third-level colleges in 1878.
