Raidió na Life starts broadcasting
25 September 1993
Recognizing that Irish speakers outside the Gaeltacht had specific needs, a campaign was launched in the late 1980s to establish an independent Irish-language station in the capital. Raidió na Life was founded as a result of this campaign. The new station carried out trial broadcasts from the Oireachtas in November 1991, and after a few other temporary broadcasts, it began full-time broadcasting on September 25, 1993.
One of Raidió na Life’s policies from day one was to broadcast songs with English lyrics, which was not permitted on Raidió na Gaeltachta n its early years, the station broadcast on 102.2 FM, and in 1999 it moved to 106.4 FM on the dial. The station operates mostly on a voluntary basis.
